How to turn a Word document into an audiobook

Most "make an audiobook" guides assume you already have an EPUB. But if you write in Microsoft Word — like the majority of indie authors — your manuscript is a .docx, and converting it to EPUB first (Calibre settings, Vellum licences, formatting cleanup) is exactly the kind of technical detour that keeps audiobooks on the someday list. Three formatting fixes before you upload

Conversion tools read the structure of your document, so five minutes of Word hygiene decides how clean your chapter list comes out:

  1. Use Heading 1 for chapter titles. Select each chapter title and apply Word's Heading 1 style (Home → Styles). That's the strongest chapter signal a converter can get. Writing "Chapter One" as plain bold text also works with good tools — lines starting with Chapter, Prologue, Epilogue, Part are detected as chapter breaks — but styles are unambiguous.
  2. Accept all tracked changes. Review → Accept All Changes and stop tracking. Narration reads your final text; a document full of pending edits is asking for a surprise. Comments are ignored either way.
  3. Keep front matter light. Title page and copyright notice are fine — they're detected and excluded from narration automatically — but anything unusual you don't want read aloud should come out before upload (or get unchecked in the chapter list after).
Check the word count after uploading. Whatever tool you use should show you the total words it found. If your 90,000-word novel shows up as 8,000 words, the wrong file went up — a common mistake with exported samples. The count is your sanity check that the whole book made it.

  3. Fix pronunciations — character and place names get a per-book pronunciation dictionary.
