How much does it cost to make an audiobook in 2026?

Audiobook production pricing is quoted in finished hours — one hour of final, edited audio. The conversion that makes every other number make sense: narration runs at roughly 9,300 words per finished hour (155 words per minute). So a 90,000-word novel is about 9–10 finished hours.

Human narration: where the $2,000 goes
- Narrator: $200–$400 per finished hour (PFH) for experienced professionals; union rates higher. 10 hours × $250 = $2,500 before anything else.
- Proofing/QC: a second listener at $50–$100 PFH, or bundled into a higher PFH rate.
- Royalty share instead: ACX offers $0 upfront with a 50/50 royalty split — free today, but you've sold half your audiobook income forever, and top narrators rarely accept royalty-share for unproven books.
Worth it for a frontlist title with momentum. Hard to justify for a backlist of five quiet sellers.
DIY AI: cheap tools, expensive weekend
Modern TTS quality is genuinely good, but tools price by character and the work is in the pipeline: splitting chapters, chunking text, stitching segments, normalizing loudness to the ~−18 to −23 LUFS retail standard, building a chaptered M4B, writing disclosure text. Budget $99+ in subscription costs per novel-length book and one to two weekends the first time. If you enjoy audio tooling, it's a fine hobby. If you'd rather be writing, it's a tax.
Done-for-you AI: the per-book math

- $2,000 human narration ÷ $3 royalty ≈ 667 sales to break even
- $79 AI conversion ÷ $3 royalty ≈ 27 sales to break even
That 25x difference is the entire economic argument. Most backlist titles will never sell 667 audio copies — almost any book with an existing readership can sell 27. AI narration doesn't replace human narration at the top of the market; it makes the rest of the market exist.
